Roseanne, the reason for the longer handle is that you can turn it more smoothly. Those little handles you have are really nice...I have similar one on the Rewind....but when you play they tend to give a 'jerky' motion...the longer the handle the smoother the turning.
What a number of grinders do is to make an adjustable length one...then alter it to suit. When you feel it is right...make the new bar and fit the old woody handle end to it.
